Our School

The Holiday Park United Methodist Church Pre-School has over thirty-five years of experience providing age appropriate learning activities and experiences to children ages two through four. We align our curriculum with the Plum Borough School District to ensure children are fully prepared to enter public school. In addition, our Pre-School schedules services such as hearing, speech and vision screenings as well as class pictures.

It is important to make hands-on learning exciting. During the school year we are visited by representatives of the local Volunteer Fire Department, the Plum Library, a local dentist and other Plum Borough businesses. All ages enjoy a Fall field trip to a pumpkin farm and the four year olds take a walking field trips to Shop-N-Save and S&T Bank for a behind the scenes tour.

The Pre-School enjoys celebrating Christian holidays and learning about God's love. With a non-denominational approach, stories are read and we talk about Jesus' birth. We also share God's ultimate expression of love for us at Easter in age appropriate ways. Families of HPUMC Pre-School children are invited to attend our church activities throughout the year.

Parties during the school year include a Halloween Parade, A Christmas Celebration, a Valentine's Party and a Mother's Day Luncheon. Parent participation is encouraged for all of these parties as well as any other special event throughout the school year.

For information regarding any of the events or activities that you have read about here, please contact the Pre-School Director, Holly Cook, at (724) 733-7953.

The objective of the Holiday Park United Methodist Church Pre-School, an outreach ministry of the Holiday Park United Methodist Church, is to support the principles of the Christian family by incorporating those examples into our instructional program. Our plan is to provide a loving and caring environment where children develop their personalities, grow in their relationship with God and prepare for life in a positive, nurturing and supportive atmosphere. The curriculum will encourage growth in all developmental areas including social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language as well as utilizing newly acquired skills. The environment will also foster the development of independence, respect and responsibility to self as well as others in a loving Christian atmosphere.

Program Description

The Holiday Park United Methodist Church Pre-School provides a variety of activities throughout the day, in every class, which focus on all aspects of the young child's development. Individual, small group and large group activities allow for social interactions among children. Fine motor and gross motor developmental skills are addressed through the use of games, music and movement, building with blocks, doing puzzles and constructing with many materials. Language skills develop as children hear and share stories, sing songs, listen to and follow directions and talk with others. Cognitive skills develop, as children are encouraged to solve problems, make choices and plan their activities and projects. Children strengthen their self-help skills by being classroom helpers, using the bathroom, washing hands, sharing snacks and learning to button, snap and zipper coats and tie shoes. Numerous opportunities for developing creative expression are available through dramatic play, art and music. As the children move into the 4-year-old classes, additional projects and activities are planned and implemented to help strengthen academic skills that are necessary for Kindergarten.

Safe Sanctuaries Policy Overview

The Holiday Park United Methodist Church provides a secure and safe environment where families may worship, attend bible studies, participate in Sunday School activities and engage in fellowship with friends and other members of our community. We maintain a "Safe Sanctuaries" policy that protects all who enter our doors.

1. Screening children and youth workers: All church staff; employees, clergy, laity or volunteers; are required to complete a criminal background check and receive a child abuse clearance. This list is maintained and updated each year.

2. Two-Adult-Rule: Church sponsored gatherings, classes, programs and activities involving children and youth require two or more unrelated adults in attendance.

3. Five-Years-Older Rule: Employees, clergy, laity or volunteers must be at least five years older than the children and youth entrusted to their care.

4. Youth Volunteers: Volunteers under the age of eighteen can assist adults in church related classes and activities, however, can not be in a position of leadership.

5. Windows/Classrooms: Any room that is used as a classroom for children or youth will have a window positioned (assisted by a mirror if necessary) so that the entire classroom is visible.

6. Six Month Rule: Adult volunteers for children and youth ministries must be members of the Holiday Park United Methodist Church for at least six months before engaging in those activities.

• Our Safe Sanctuaries policies are based on the book, "Safe Sanctuaries – Reducing the Risk of Abuse in the Church for Children and Youth", written by Joy Thornburg Mellon published by Discipleship Resources.
